Early days, still in US

Last November I applied for an intriguing opportunity to visit Thailand for a semester. It seemed like a long shot at the time: 17 scholarships being offered to AFS applicants from across the US. They have chosen me, based on my application, recommendations and an interview. The job (unpaid, but expenses paid) is to act as a teaching assistant for one semester, helping to teach English to Thai learners. Unknown age, unknown English proficiency, unknown location in Thailand--all that will be disclosed in good time. I'm thrilled, thankful to all who helped me get the chance, grateful to Aom who introduced me to Thailand in the first place.

Now my job is to learn, learn, learn--as much as I can absorb about Thai history, Thai food, the Thai language. I feel like a sponge, with lots of wonderful things to see and know and think about.

Meanwhile I'm working at two part-time nursing jobs, still am learning about the job of AFS sending coordinator for MetroWest, am increasingly aware of wanting to spend time with my family and friends before I go, and am eagerly awaiting my trip to Pennsylvania for the birth of my second grandchild (a girl, to join her big brother Remy).

It's fun to hear from people who have visited Thailand or have a Thai connection. All the different perspectives shed light on my view of that unknown part of the world.

I'll keep posting, as things get closer and then as I'm actually in Thailand...
